Lots of words. Listen for the Yitsbins. Barq mocked me for weeks after that. This is one of my favoritest ever Barenaked Ladies songs. When writing the parody I actually paid very close attention to Weird Al Yankovic's 'Jerry Springer' parody of one week, and much of my rhyming scheme and rhythmical flow is actually more due to Weird Al than the original BNL track itself.
Sometimes you have a subject that you want to write a parody about, and you go looking for a good song that is a) do-able with the equipment you have, b) fits the mood that you want for your parody song and c) has a lyrical theme that lends itself to being parodied in the subject that you want to write a parody about.
Sometimes it's easier than that. You just have a flash of inspiration and the parody idea and the song to use come to you at the same time and you think to yourself "This song is about X. If we make it about Y, it'll make a great parody"
Often, parody ideas come from the original song titles themselves. Like 'Twitch Me Now', or 'You Can't Hurry Buffs' - You change a word or two in the title, retaining something approximating the original rhyming scheme and you go and build the parody around that.
And sometimes you just have wicked cool songs that you want to parody and you have to come up with the subjects that make them funny. One Week was like that. Weird Al did most of the hard work parodying this one. I just changed it from a Jerry Springer fight-fest to an EQ fight-fest.
